VIDESHI MAGAZINE—entertainment magazine that explores media representation of South Asian Americans in pop culture.
videshi, of Hindi origin, translates into English as “foreign; not made in India.” Typically, the term is reserved for anyone or anything that is not desi, or “from South Asian ancestry.”
For second-generation South Asians in America, Hollywood’s media portrayals of our culture were once rare & often inaccurate. But within the past decade, many South Asian-American performers & artists have broken stereotypes and are creating a new identity that embraces both cultures. Whether it be through film, television, books, music, or even stand-up comedy, videshi magazine will celebrate, critique, & challenge Western entertainment featuring South Asians.
