Candice Patton Cast As Iris West in “The Flash”

The CW’s The Flash is racebending its romantic lead … for the better.

African-American actress Candice Patton has been cast to play Iris West, Barry Allen/The Flash’s love interest and, more importantly, a character who has hitherto been white.

In an ideal world such decisions would no longer be newsworthy, but let’s face it, this is a rare example of a studio deviating from the source material to diversify a cast, not white wash it (*cough* The Last Airbender *cough*)

It’s also worth noting that, according to Bludhaven Banter, the casting call for Iris West specified her as African-American. This means that Patton’s casting was not a fluke or a coincidence but the result of a conscientious effort to diversify what could have easily been an all-white cast.

It’s a step in the right direction.

Diversity? pssh. Social Justice Warriors are racist. They race-bend a certain character because they identify them by their race, not as an individual.
